DO YOU HATE TAKING MINUTES ?

MINUTES MADE EASY, A ONE DAY COURSE IN EDINBURGH - 7 FEBRUARY 2012

MINUTES ARE A NECESSARY EVIL

They remind people of the actions they took responsibility for.

They provide an audit trail of the decisions and outcomes.

People frequently change jobs and the minutes can be the only ‘memory’ of the issues and the meeting.

Even at the everyday level, minutes are a hugely important document and yet they are often left to someone with little training or support, thrown in the deep end and having to find their own way.  In addition, there is little good practice and plenty of poor practice to follow, so it is not surprising that minute-takers are confused and the poor practice is replicated through the organisation.

This one-day session will help you to

structure the agenda and add information to focus and speed up the meeting;

recognise the points which are relevant to the discussion and take appropriate notes;

cope with difficulties such as understanding the discussion, remaining focused, etc;

take fast, accurate notes without the need for shorthand or speedwriting;

structure notes into a logical summary;

ensure that the tone of minutes is appropriate;

define actions to ensure the meetings achieve something and use the minutes as the audit trail;

take minutes at short notice;

work effectively with the chairperson and participants;

present minutes professionally

WHAT'S SO GOOD ABOUT THIS COURSE

It’s highly practical.  No ‘death by PowerPoint’, no lecture, lots of practical exercises and discussion.  It’s led by Joanna Gutmann, author of the Sunday Times’ ‘Taking Minutes of Meetings and specialist trainer in minutes; delegates appreciate her many years’ experience of minute-taking and practical expertise in this area.  The course is accredited by the Institute of Commercial Management and delegates can apply to the institute for the ‘Certificate in Minute-taking’ following attendance.
